In The Community A Case for Character through Forever Kids

The PEERS Network helped prepare over 100 suitcases for A Case for Character through Foreverkids.org on December 10, 2016.

In our country alone, there are over 440,000 in the foster care system. When foster kids are transferred to another home, which is often, they are given a small plastic bag and just hours to pack. All they can take with them is what fits into that bag. We can do something about this. We can provide a SUITCASE with character materials for these kids,  A Case for Character! It will be theirs and they can take it wherever they go. Something they can call their own.

A Case for Character through Forever Kids

When we stepped into ministry several decades ago, we had no idea where this journey would lead us. We wanted to affect our culture and the lives around us, regardless of the personal cost.

As we continue to seek for ways to affect our culture and our world, many opportunities come our way.  We have never felt led to embrace any until now.

One of our Forever Kids board members came to me recently with a report that broke his heart.  He asked if there was anything our organization could do to reach this need. We felt we should expand the work of Forever Kids to take on a need that is a systemic cause for serious problems in our nation today.  It is the dilemma of foster children.

In our country alone, there are over 400,000 (Dept. of HHS Child Welfare Report 2012) in the foster care system.  When many of these children are transferred to another home, they are given a plastic bag and just hours to pack.  The stories of these children are heartrending.  They have few things to call their own.

We are very excited to announce that Forever Kids has now established a program that will give foster children their own suitcase to take with them everywhere they go.  And, in every suitcase we are placing the ABC’s of Character book and music CD. We are calling it:

Supporting "A Case for Character" for Foster Youth

PEERS Network will be donating to foster youth in San Diego County in the form of their very own Suitcases with a couple items inside for the holidays.

On December 10, 2016 PEERS Network will be gathering in Enchinitas, CA to pack 150 suitcases for foster youth so they can have something they own that can be locked and taken with them as they move from foster home to foster home.  These kids get moved often and when they do, sometimes it’s only with a few hours notice. They get a big black trash bag to put all their stuff in and have to leave the rest.  Some of these kids don’t even have their own deodorant or toothpaste.  We will be putting in a toiletry kit and a book called the ABC’s of Character into each suitcase.  A Case for Character charity is giving them something they can call their own and using character books to teach them things they wouldn’t otherwise learn. Kids in America shouldn’t have to have the shame of carrying all their belongings in a trash bag.

We would like to raise enough money to wipe out this entire issue in San Diego county.  So that no children in the foster system in San Diego have to receive a trash bag ever again. The goal of $206,000 would get 3,495 kids suitcases in San Diego County. That is the total number of foster kids in our county.
