Each year in San Diego County, nearly 300 youth transition from foster care to independence. These youth must immediately begin to care for themselves without much, if any, prior preparation for independent living. This leads to appalling outcomes that have been accepted for much too long:

  • Some 45% of those leaving foster care become homeless within a year
  • A mere 10% attend college• 1-3% obtain a bachelor’s degree
  • Approximately 50% of these youth under the age of 21 are unemployed
  • More than 70% of all state penitentiary inmates are former foster youth.

Just In Time (JIT) mobilizes the community to provide transitioning foster youth with opportunities for self-sufficiency through emergency support, essential resources, and caring personal guidance at critical junctures on their path to independence. The combination of resources and relationships provides a reliable extended family and leads to dramatically different outcomes for the over 500 JIT participants each year.
